I Could Have Done More - January 29, 2012

If you follow the world of sports then you are quite likely aware of the death of the legendary Joe Paterno.  Joe died this past Sunday at the age of 85 after a two month bout with lung cancer.  If you don’t follow sports then let me give you a little insight into his life.  Joe was the football coach for the Penn State Nittany Lions for 46 seasons.  When he left Beaver Stadium for the final time in October, Paterno had amassed 409 victories—more than any major college football coach in the history of the game.  In fact the next closet active coach has 244 wins.

Sharpen Your Spiritual Edge - January 22, 2012

I recently heard a story about a lumber jack who challenged another to an all-day wood chopping contest.  The challenger worked with all his might, stopping only for a brief lunch break.  The other man had a leisurely lunch and took several breaks throughout the day.  At the end of the day, the challenger was surprised and somewhat annoyed to find that the other fellow had chopped substantially  more wood than he had.  "I don’t get it," he said.  "Every time I checked, you were taking a rest, yet you chopped more wood than I did.  How did you do it."

Just in Case You Weren't Sure - by Pastor Mike Altena - January 8, 2012

Back when I was a little kid, the guy who pastored our church was the Reverend Louis Tamminga Jr.  We referred to him as “Reverend Tamminga.”  Then when I was in high school we were led by the Reverend David Smit, although he preferred to be called “Pastor Dave.”  Like with everything, there seems to be this constant progression of change.  I’ve always wondered if the change in the titles were part of being “Reformed.”

The unexpected happenings can really change things around.  Last week, I mentioned the “fear factor” as Mary was preparing for her wedding when she received the shocking news of her pregnancy.  In fact, I am taken back by all the fear that came about in this precious story of Christ’s birth.  Last week we saw this fear with Mary and then I think of the shepherds who were filled with fear when the angels showed up and started singing a tune.  They couldn’t believe this unbelievable sight and we read “they were filled with fear”.  Don’t you doubt it; Joseph was filled

Our lives seem to be programmed to a schedule.  Or at least we would like to think everything has to be planned and scheduled.  We set alarm clocks to get us awake in the morning at a certain time.  Plan calendars are filled in by the day or some electronic device is set to beep when we have an appointment.  Our lives need to be organized don’t they?  What happens when an unexpected event takes place in our lives which we are not looking for?  You have guessed it.  We often panic or maybe we will even shout out “Wait a minute.

It is hard to believe, but we are in the season of Advent.  It comes so quickly after Thanksgiving and in many ways we are just not ready for this time.  However, neither you nor I can stop the rushing time. Right after we give thanks to God for his many blessings, we come together to celebrate this wonderful time when God sent His one and only Son into the world.  Make sure you take the proper time this year to celebrate the special meaning of this season of joy.

There are times when I really don’t like to go to congregational meetings.  The same old thing takes place when everyone makes their reports and the budgets are presented.  We sing a song and hear some devotional thoughts and nothing really seems too exciting.  Well, that sure wasn’t the case on Monday evening for those who attended the congregational meeting.  What an uplifting time as so many reports were made and exciting things were shared.  As an outsider looking in, you are to be commended for your generous and faithful giving through this major building proje

Each one of us would like to receive a personal card in the mail from time to time.  It is always fun to receive these notes which encourage us and uplift us.  This past spring, I needed to go through a surgery.  I was overwhelmed with the number of cards which were sent my way.  So many people wanted to share personal thoughts with me to encourage me.  Don’t overlook the powerful ministry you have in ministering to others.

It just is hard to believe we are at the beginning of November.  Soon we will all have our comments about the winter season.  But hey, we did get an extra hour of sleep as daylight savings time fell back to the “normal” time.  By the way, how do you define normal?  We all search for things to be “normal” in one way or another.  Yet at about the time we figure out what normal means, we hear God asking us to do things that may appear not to be normal to us.  Is ARC a “normal” church?  Well if “normal” means just going along the same way we have always done t

I share greetings with everyone.  It is a wonderful fall day outside as I write this article.  I was blessed yesterday as I looked out my kitchen window to our two red maple trees.  Their leaves reveal such brilliance and their beauty is unfolded as a few keep clutching to the tree branch while others lay on a beautiful red blanket on the ground.  All this reminds us of change which is coming around the corner.  It won’t be long before I look out the window to see a blanket of snow covering up this once beautiful sight.

Today is a great day to again check in with all my friends at American Reformed.  I trust you enjoyed reading the article last week about being a “missional church”.  You can’t help but run into this concept almost every time you read an article about the church of today.  We have “missional worship services”, “missional committees” and “missional leaders”.  Today everyone wants to be “missional”.  But can you think of any pastor who would claim they were not missional in their thinking?  Your mission statement reveals a “missional” desire.  Read it again

I will be making my first attempt at writing this article for the Archive.  Already I forgot to do this last week, so don’t get your hopes up that you will see something coming from my computer each week.  I will do my best.  Let me just say, I really enjoyed my time with you this past Sunday.  Worship is such an uplifting experience and I was grateful I was able to lead the congregation in worship.

Pastor Dave's Nectar for the Soul - September 25, 2011

My final Nectar article as your pastor. The end of this week, September 30 will be my final day. It is a bittersweet moment. I will miss my involvement with ARC, her people and her ministry. With the completion of the new worship center ARC enters a new and exciting chapter in her ministry. I am grieved that I will not be a part of the great and wonderful work that God is going to do through this majestic and grand facility. I know that you will use it for the glory of God and bring much praise to God through it.

A major resource, source of strength, guide and help for my years of ministry and life in general is what I call a morning quiet time. Close to the start of every day I spend time in prayer, Bible reading, meditation and journaling. I didn’t always do this in my Christian life (I made profession of faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord late in 1964) but probably began during my seminary internship year in 1971 which makes it forty years ago. I highly recommend this spiritual discipline for anyone for their soul life and spiritual development.

Pastor Dave's Nectar for the Soul - September 11, 2011

Last Sunday the first point from my message on Proverbs 3 was “to cherish and value the Word and wisdom of God”. I do believe in the power and inspiration of God’s Word in the Bible. I was encouraged to read in Monday’s Argus-Leader newspaper the following two quotes.

What I am about to say will come as no surprise to most of you. My ministry has been supported, encouraged, enriched, strengthened and assisted by my wonderful wife. Joyce has been a great help to me throughout my years of ministry. She has been there for me in a multiplicity of ways. Her insight and intuition into certain situations has been far keener than mine. When I have been discouraged or negative she has picked me up with positive thoughts.

Pastor Dave's Nectar for the Soul - August 28, 2011

The Zondervan publishing people sent the following article which struck a major chord with me in its talk about the ongoing battle with the sin nature that is oh so persistent in my life. I detest and despise it and seek to overcome it yet find myself doing that which I do not want to do and that which is displeasing to God and unhelpful to others.
